Dr Domènec Puig received a degree in computer science and a doctorate from the UPC, in 1992 and 2004, respectively. In 1992, he joined the Dept. of Computer Eng. and Maths of the University Rovira i Virgili (URV), where he is Full Professor since 2017. He is the principal investigator of the Intelligent Robotics and Computer Vision lab of the ITAKA research group of the URV. His research interests include image processing, pattern recognition, computer vision, medical image analysis, machine learning, perception models, scene analysis, mobile robotics and socially assistive robotics. Dr Puig has participated as a researcher in more than 40 research projects related to his topics of interest, funded by public administrations (autonomous, state and European), being the principal investigator in 35 projects. In addition, he has participated in more than 35 contracts, agreements and R&D&I projects with public or private administrations or entities. Dr Puig has participated in more than 150 publications in journals, book chapters and conferences. More than 90 in journals indexed in the Journal Citation Reports of the ISI Web of Knowledge (more than 30 in Q1). Noteworthy are his publications in some of the most prestigious international journals in its field: IEEE Trans. on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, Int. Journal of Computer Vision, IEEE Trans. on Image Processing, Pattern Recognition, Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine, Image and Vision Computing, Computer Vision and Image Understanding. Dr Puig has supervised 20 doctoral theses completed (16 with international mention, and 2 industrial doctorates), related to his topics of interest. Dr Puig has been co-inventor of 3 patents and several intellectual property registers, and has participated in numerous international conferences, acting as a speaker, reviewer of works and chair of sessions. He has also been a reviewer of national and international competitive research projects, as well as a reviewer of articles in prestigious international journals. Dr Puig is co-founder of the spin-off company of the URV: “Up2Smart”, in 2019 and RetinaReadRisk in 2023. Dr Puig was awarded as a “Distinguished Professor of the URV 2019”. He has also received the awards to the Social Impact of the research 2023, 2019 and 2017, by the Social Council of the URV, for the projects: “Artificial Intelligence at the service of improving the quality of life and the independent life of people with disabilities”, “Customized online games to improve the living conditions of people with cerebral palsy” and “Detection and analysis of breast cancer through computer vision”, respectively. He also was awarded with the “Recognition of the Quality of Research 2012” by the URV.
