Summary

Two ways of representing knowledge which are usually used as background knowledge for medical decision making are presented and formalized. These are cost functions and (layered) partial orders (LPOs). Mathematical operations to transform a cost function into a LPO and vice versa and to combine several cost functions or LPOs are also proposed.
