Summary
Power law (scale-free) distributions of the form P(s)=C*s-a can be seen in fields as diverse as river networks, stock market crashes and earthquakes. These phenomena are poorly described by models in equilibrium, since in order to recreate a scale-free response in the system an internal parameter needs to be tuned to a critical point (e.g. temperature in Ising model). It is also clear that nature is rarely in equilibrium. Self-organised criticality provides a framework for understanding how dynamical systems out of equilibrium can respond in a scale-free manner with no need for tuning of any internal parameters.
