Summary
Gossip protocols have proved to be a viable solution to setup and manage large-scale P2P services or applications in a fully decentralised scenario.
They provide remarkable features (such as: scalability, robustness, simple design, ?), but only when all the participants follow the rules dictated by the actual protocols. When one or more malicious nodes join the network the result can be catastrophic with minimal effort.
We present a general attack model aimed to defeat a specific and fundamental gossip service: the Peer Sampling. Then, we present distinct techniques to contrast the effect of the attack and to identify the malicious nodes. Our results are based on an extensive experimental evaluation. Basically, the aim of these techniques is to contribute to the design of more resilient and more sucure P2P gossip services.
