Summary
Research on complex networks has suggested that the more interactions a node has the greater its capacity to absorb changes in their network of interactions. While the number of connections might be considered the gold standard measure of resilience in many systems, empirical data in ecological, social, and financial networks do not always support this idea. In this talk, I will introduce a computational framework to investigate the impact of global environmental change in real ecological networks. You will find out the conditions under which generalists (nodes with many interactions) can go extinct first. Our findings may provide important lessons to appropriately identify endangered species or even vulnerable financial institutions in the face of rapid environmental change.
