Summary
The term self-organization characterizes a variety of non-equilibrium patterns including moving fronts, excitation waves, localized spots, Turing patterns, synchronization and collective motions. These phenomena have been extensively studied in classical continuous systems. However, reaction elements can also be connected in a non-trivial way, thus forming complex networks. In the network systems, new kinds of patterns have been found. They share some common principals with their classical analogues, but also, they exhibit important differences induced by the networks topology. This seminar is focused on self-organization processes occurring in networks of diffusively coupled active elements as well as on control and purposeful design of nonequilibrium patterns in such network systems. Bistable and excitable local dynamics will be discussed.
