Summary
Last June, Google Project Zero, along with other research groups, independently discovered a series of vulnerabilities in modern CPUs, which allow, with the use of a side channel, access to typically inaccessible memory addresses. These three attacks, collectively known as Spectre and Meltdown, defeat one of the main foundations of security, which is the isolation of process memory.
In this talk, we will discuss the building blocks of the attacks and the CPU and OS features that allow them to take place. We will also discuss the possible (and taken) actions to protect us against these attacks.
