Summary
The aim of breast cancer risk assessment is to establish the level of risk that a woman has of developing breast cancer in the future. In the literature, most efforts in mammographic image analysis have been devoted to other tasks such as anomaly detection or classification. However, in the last two decades, automated analysis of mammographic images has shown great potential for identifying asymptomatic patients at higher risk of developing breast cancer. In this presentation, we will review the foundations for breast cancer risk assessment based on the fully-computerized analysis of screening mammography images. We will give especial emphasis on the current progress and challeges in order to identify unanswered questions and future prospects for image processing and analysis applied to breast cancer risk assessment.
Short Bio: Said Pertuz is an assistant professor at the Electric, Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering School at Universidad Industrial de Santander (Colombia). He received the Master and PhD degrees in Informatics Engineering at Rovira i Virgili University (Spain) in 2009 and 2013, respectively. During 2014 he was a posdoctoral researcher at the Department of Radiology of the University of Pennsylvania (USA). Subsequently, he was posdoctoral researcher at Tampere University (Finland) before joining Universidad Industrial de Santander, in 2018. His current research interest are in the application of computer vision and image processing techniques for the analysis of breast images for breast cancer research.
