Summary
We will review the great advances in the techniques used to solve the N-body problem that have appeared in the last decade. There have been two main trends. First, new codes like the hierarchical oct-tree method and the fast multipole method reduce the CPU time needed to calculate the accelerations using lower resolutions for distant particles. On the other hand, specific problem-oriented processors, like the GRAPE machines, have upgraded considerably the feasible number of particles used in the simulations, reaching peak speeds of teraflops in this specific problem.
